Kendall D. Briggs is completing a commission from Sarah Chang for a violin concerto; Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra (...a riveder le stelle) by the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Wilson Hermanto for NY cellist Amy Barston. Rhapsody was inspired by a short text from Dante's La Divina Commedia and uses 18 variations on a passacaglia theme to musically reflect on Dante's journey into the Inferno and his ascent when he sees, once again, the stars.

Tina Davidson was commissioned by WHYY-TV 12 for their 90 minute feature film, Philadelphia Diary. The film, which explores the drama of everyday life, employs Davidson in an innovative manner; instead of writing music for a film sequence, she is writing an original work in response to certain ideas in the film without actually viewing it. The result was In that Early Light for glass harmonica and cello trio, performed by Cecilia Bower (harm) and the cellist Ohad Bar-David from the orchestra. As part of their new interdisciplinary projects, Davidson also received a commission from Mural Arts to work with muralist Barbara Smolen to create a "music wall" that incorporates musical ideas and components into the mural. In weekly sessions at a local school in Kensington, Davidson will also work with students to develop poetry and a group composition that expresses their ideas and feelings about music. Using the text developed by the students, Davidson will create a new song for the school chorus, which will be performed at the mural's dedication ceremony. There is also a commission by the Colorado Quartet for triple string quartet. Working with her student composers, Davidson will develop the new work using student input and musical suggestions as well as some melodies they have written. The resultant work will be scored for three quartets, one professional and two student. The Colorado Quartet will work with selected players from Girad Academic Music Program and CAPA, and will perform the work twice in the spring of 2000.

Nancy Bloomer Deussen received the Ann and Lee E. Mueller Chamber Music Commission for the Mu Phi Epsilon Centennial Celebration for a large chamber work for 6-8 instruments of approximately 8 minutes duration; and a commission from Jim and Pat Watt for an orchestral suite-minimum 30 minutes duration-in memoriam for their daughter, Catherine Margaret Watt who passed away this September. The suite will be entitled A Silver, Shining Strand and will be inspired by their daughter's poetry.

Alex Shapiro's Of Breath and Touch for bassoon and piano was commissioned by bassoonist Carolyn Beck; Shiny Kiss, a solo flute work was commissioned by flutist Chelsea Czuchra and premiered in Carmel, CA, on October 16; Journey, a work for electric violin and electronic soundscape for Mary Lou Newmark which premiered on November 11; and Transplant, a work for organ commissioned by organist Frances Nobert that premiered on January 18 on one of the largest organs in the nation, First Congregational Church in Los Angeles, as part of Ms. Nobert's concert for the 2000 Organ Alive! Conference.

Marilyn J. Ziffrin has received a commission from the New London, NH Baptist Church to write a cantata (soloists, adult and children's choir, various instrumentalists, narrator) celebrating freedom. The text will be written by Pastor Richard Dutton. Jane Ann McSwiney, Minister of Music, will direct the performance.

Alex Shapiro was featured as the June 1999 guest on the KXLU 88.9-FM Los Angeles radio show, "Trilogy," for an hour-long interview and broadcast of her recent works.

Erich Stem's Shaded Gray for string quartet was broadcast on 91.5 FM, WOBC's FOLDOVER program hosted by Tom Lopez in Ohio (October), 91.1 FM, WHFC's Music From Marrs hosted by Leslie Marrs in Maryland (August), and 90.3 FM KAZU's Vast Fields in California (June).

Alex Shapiro: Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano won the Best Performance award in March 1999 from the Delius Association of Florida. The work has received numerous performances across the country by The Titan Trio, Ensemble Green, and other ensembles, as well as by Berkeley Price, Nancy Roth and Deon Price, who performed the work at IAWM's London Congress this past July and continue to program it on their concerts around Los Angeles. In the Fall of 1999, Alex received a Special Award from ASCAP.

Karel Husa: The Karel Husa Gallery opened in the new James J. Whalen Center for Music at the Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, which houses a collection of manuscripts, memorabilia and archives.

Marilyn J. Ziffrin was the guest composer of the Southern NH Community School of the Arts on Oct. 23. At the celebration held in the Derry NH Opera House, the first performance of her piano solo, Recurrences, was given by Donna Stoering. Her piano duet, Yankee Hooray, was also performed by George Lopez and an advanced student.
