Jeremy Beck was honored by the California Arts Council as an individual who has "demonstrated . . . artistic excellence for at least 10 years," and cited for having won "numerous awards and commisions" by awarding him a $5000 fellowship by the California Arts Council.

John Corigliano received an Oscar from the Academy Awards for Original Film Scoring for the movie The Red Violin.

Alex Shapiro was awarded a prestigious Artists Fellowship in Performing Arts from the California Arts Council for 2000 in recognition of her work and her contribution to music arts in California.

John Winsor's first attempt at film scoring--Totem--for the animated film by Stacy Steers, won the Modern Music Festival 2000 Film Scoring Competition from the Colorado Music Festival, Alan Yamamoto festival director. The premiere screening took place on April 7 using a recording of the Modern Music Festival Chamber Players at the Boulder Public Library.

Gregg Wramage's Deep Midnight (1998) was chosen by David Zinman as the recipient of the 2000 Aspen Music Festival Jacob Druckman Composition Prize. It will be premiered this summer by the Aspen Sinfonia conducted by Daniel Hege.

Ty Emerson is currently working on two commissions--Seven Letters is a choral setting on text from chapters 2 and 3 from Revelation for Kathy Hullin, and Seven Sketches for alto sax, piano and wind ensemble for Gary Louie, Kirsten Taylor and Harlan Parker.

Alex Shapiro has been commissioned by the principal tubist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Norman Pearson and pianist Cynthia Bauhof-Williams to compose a work for tuba and piano. The title of the piece is Music for Two Big Instruments. Upon completing this piece, she will begin a commission for violinist Sabrina Berger.

In January, Ty Emerson was in residence at the MacDowell Colony. In February he enjoyed three performances: Dedications (piano trio) was performed at the Resolution 2000 New Muisc Festival in Louisville, KY; Iron and Aire (vln, sax, pno) was premiered at the Great Falls concert series in VA with Gary Louie on sax, Kirsten Taylo on piano and anice Martin on violin; and the Harp Concerto (windensemble) was premiered at the Peabody Institute with Harlan Parker conducting and Michaela Trnkov.

Jeffrey Hoover was a guest composer at the Wichita State University Contemporary Music Festival, where performed his own Five Mysteries on soprano saxophone, tape and paintings on February 26, 2000. He also gave a lecture on combining music with art.

H. Owen Reed received last year for La Fiesta Mexicana the Michigan State University Recognition and Honors for Scholarly Contributions and Publications. He has also been invited to be a guest composer in February 2001 for an all-Reed program of orchestral/wind ensemble music in the Cincinnati/Blue Ash Ohio area by conductor Paul Stanbery.
