Chamber Symphony and Decade Divertimento were performed by members of the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 19. The concert was recorded and broadcast on the WDR (West German Radio).

AWARDS

Al Benner received an ASCAP Standard Award.

Dinos Constantinides received an ASCAP Standard Award.

Brian Holmes won the professional composer's category in the 1998 Amadeus Choir Christmas Carol and Chanukah Song Competition for his work Carol of the Field Mice.

Eric P. Mandat has won Southern Illinois University Carbondale's top faculty prize for research and creative activity. Mandat, a "new music," or avant-garde, composer, experiments with producing sounds, pitches and tones not usually associated with the clarinet.

Richard Nanes received one of the highest honors in communications by the International Angel Awards sponsored by Excellence in Media. He was presented a Silver Angel as winner of the best Music Award of the year for his Holocaust Symphony.

Dan Pinkston was the winner of the Austin ProChorus 1999 Choral Competition Contest for his work My Soul Magnifies the Lord. He was also the recipient of the Beckenhorst Award--a publisher's award-- (Dec. 1998) in composition.

William Price was selected as the first prize winner in the Southeastern Composers League 1999 Philip Slates Memorial Composition Contest for his work for solo flute, Strata I.

Daniel Robbins received an ASCAP Standard Award.

OTHER NEWS

Daniel Adams presented a paper entitled The Solo Timpani in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century on Feb. 19 at the South Central Regional Conference of the College Music Society, held at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Al Benner founded the Louisiana Composer's Consortium. Other LCC members are NACUSA's own Dinos Constantinides and William Price. Benner will be the guest composer/lecturer at the La Crosse New Music Festival this November 16-18 in Wisconsin. He will give a talk on The Role of Publisher and Composer Combined.

Richard Nanes was appointed composer-in-residence with the Santa Fe Symphony and also with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey. On May 3, he took part in a panel discussion on The World of Music and Music Soundtracks in Film and Television at The First Annual Legal Symposium on the World of Film and Television, Coral Gables, FL. During this symposium, he gave a recital of his own works.

Daniel Robbins joined the music faculty in January of Cypress College, CA, where he teaches motion picture and television music. As part of the NY State Humanities Month, Genesee Community College and the Arts Council for Wyoming County will co-sponsor Robbins' Music in the Movies lectures and piano concerts. These presentations have been underwritten by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. Robbins will focus on the cinemusical achievements of his one-time mentor, legendary composer Miklos Rozsa. The events will take place in Perry, NY, Oct. 14-16.
