COMMISSIONS

Tina Davidson's The Selkie Boy for narrator and orchestra was featured as the main work in The Philadelphia Orchestra¡s first annual Education Week. The program entitled "Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea" on which The Selkie Boy was performed, took more than 15,000 Philadelphia students on a musical exploration of the ocean. Conductor-in-residence Luis Biava conducted the six performances, which were visually interpreted by the Mum Puppettheater. In a pre-concert "Adventure," Davidson and artist Peggy Gyulai, worked with the children, leading them in a delightful one-hour session. The children drew pictures, wrote their own graphically rendered musical scores of the ocean and performed them under Davidson's guidance. In September, Davidson was the guest of the Kansas City corporation, DST Systems, Inc. During the three-day residency, Davidson met with associates of the corporation to discuss bringing music into the workplace as a training tool for new recruits. She also presented her "Creativity Workshop" to DST employees and other interested members of the Kansas City music community. This interactive, hands-on workshop afforded the opportunity to explore the creative process by using compositional techniques, encouraging participants to work as a team as well as an individual, and took a look at the relationship of individual creativity in a broader context (team, company, market, and community).

Aurelio de la Vega was awarded one of the FACE Awards, given each year to someone of Cuban origin who has excelled in a given field of endeavor. He personally received this Award on Sept. 7, during a televised ceremony at the Wyndham Hotel in Miami, FL. One of De la Vega's music manuscripts--The Magic Labyrinth-- has been included in the 733 page volume Music History from Primary Sources, published last July by The Library of Congress.

Joel Feigin has completed a new opera: Twelfth Night, requested to be written by the Opera Studio of Moscow Conservatory in Russia. Feigin also made a chamber version of his earlier opera, Mysteries of Eleusis, for the Moscow Conservatory, and it was given six performances there in 2000. Song of Loving-Kindness (text from the Metta Sutta, adapted by Jaime Manrique and Feigin), commissioned by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, was premiered at their gala event in Santa Barbara, CA on Sept. 23.

Czech Masaryk University presented an honorary doctor of arts degree to Karel Husa. President Zlatuska and Dean Bek made the presentation. This is Husa's eighth honorary degree. The Evocations of Slovakia was performed by the Ithaca Trio to conclude the ceremony on May 12. Husa guest-conducted his Music for Prague 1968 at the MENC National Convention in Washington, D.C. on March 11. Other performances were given at the Duquesne University, Cleveland Institute of Music, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State Universities, Ithaca College, Baldwin- Wallace Conservatory, Carnegie-Mellon and Montclair Universities, Naperville High School among others. Syracuse Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kazuioshi Akiyama performed the orchestral version of the Music for Prague 1968 on its subscription series in March.

Jeffrey Hoover was a guest composer for the Contemporary Music Festival at Indiana State University. On Oct. 27, Hoover created an action painting on stage to visually accompany his electronic composition A House of Glass and Dreams. This performance was the concert premiere of this work.

The world premiere of Geoffrey Kidde's Shooting Star for four percussionists was featured at the Bar Harbor Music Festival's New Composers Evening in July. The ensemble presented was the Stuart Marrs Percussion Ensemble, and Kidde made his conducting performance debut. Also in July, Five Songs from William Carlos Williams was included at the American Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, NY, as part of the Gregg Smith Singers Composer's Reading Workshop.

Donald Martino is looking forward to his 70th birthday in May, 2001. Celebratory concerts are planned by ISCM in New York City on February 25 and the Fromm Foundation at Harvard on February 16 and March 16. More concerts to come.
