04/15/2007: Memorial Native Plant Bed completion


 

07/28/2007 at 9:00 to: Wildlife Festival

Knotts Island Elementary School.
This is an annual event that is held in conjunction with the Knotts Island Peach Festival.

 

09/06/2007: Currituck Wildlife Fest.

Currituck High School.
The Currituck Wildlife Festival will be held on September 8th and 9th, 2007, at Currituck High School. Brenda has all ready spoken with an event coordinator to secure a booth for the Friends Group.

 

03/15/2008 at 08:30AM: Causeway Clean up (Adopt a Highway)

Begin at Entrance to Refuge Headquarters.
Beginning at the Visitors Center located at 316 Marsh Causeway; Members will meet to remove trash and litter from the habitat and refuge environment. This project will add community awareness through the Friends of Mackay Island. In addition, this activity supports the protection of our eco-system. Please contact Mac McFetters for more information.

04/04/2008: 2008 National Friends Conference

West Virginia.
We are proud to announce that we have two members from our group that will be attending the conference this year.
The theme for the conference is “Friends for the Future.” Skills-building sessions and discussions will focus on integrating WinteR 2008 current Service and Refuge System priorities, challenges to managing and supporting the Refuge System, and tools
and opportunities for addressing them.
The conference aims to:
*increase the effectiveness and capacity of Friends organizations;
*promote and identify how Friendsorganizations can support Refuge
System priorities and help the Service address key conservation
challenges;
*and showcase programs that have strengthened the Refuge System.

04/14/2008: Sprout and Sort for Knotts Island Elementary School 3rd Grade

School and Refuge Headquarters.
This is a Project OSPREY event. The third graders will be growing parsnips in the classroom and monitoring their growth. The parsnips will transplanted later in order to serve as a host plant to the Black Swallowtail Butterflies. Also included in this activity is a chance for the students to use a microscope to view soil samples in order to learn about the composition of wetlands.

 

04/26/2008 at 9:00AM: Fly Tying and Casting Workshop

Refuge Headquarters, 316 Marsh Causeway, Knotts Island.
Learn the art of fly tying and casting. The cost of the workshop is $20.00, which includes all supplies. Please RSVP by March 30, 2008 by calling Jan Smith at (252) 429-3074.
Hosted by the Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers in partnership with the Friends of Mackay Island are holding this event at the Refuge Headquarters located at 316 Marsh Causeway, Knotts Island, NC. The class will begin at 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a 1-hour break for lunch. You may bring a brown bag lunch or visit the local store, which serves pizza and sandwiches. There is also a new Deli located at the North Landing Campground.

 

05/09/2008 at 10:00AM: Live Oak Point Conservation

Mackay Island NWR / Live Oak Point.
Please join the Friends of Mackay Island as we prepare to clear out weeds and debris at Live Oak Point. The purpose of the project is to enhance the growth of the trees that were planted in 2005 as a part of a restoration project. Be aware that you will need gloves and garden tools.

 

05/24/2008 at Sunrise: Open Roads Day

Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge will be open to vehicle traffic on this day. Normally the refuge is closed to vehicle traffic however, on occasion it is opened to traffic. The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset.
Future dates for Open Roads are: July 4,5,6, 2008 and July 26,27, 2008
